The ECU School of Nursing and Midwifery's research team is driven by a commitment to inspire excellence in nursing and practice through innovative and strategic research. Our staff are experts in their field who collaborate with national and international industry partners and universities. Our current research themes include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health, Regional, remote, and rural health, and Mental Health (psychological & socioecological determinants).

With an expanding research team, we have the capacity to undertake research across four key areas:


	Centre for Research in Aged Care,
	Acute & Chronic Disease Prevention, Management, & Survivorship in Children, Young People, & Adults,
	Safety, Quality and Workforce, and
	Safe, Quality Midwifery Care. 


Comorbidity is one of the greatest challenges for age-related health care with over 80% of adults aged 65 years and older having at least one chronic condition and 68% with two or more. The Resources and Life Strategy Management (REALISM) intervention has been developed based on the Baltes and Baltes Model of Selective Optimization with Compensation (SOC) (Donnellan et al. 2012; Donnellan and O’Neill, 2014) to determine whether it improves disease associated health outcomes, reablement and independence in older adults with one or more chronic diseases.

The focus of this post-doctoral position is to develop and examine the REALISM intervention in the context of older adults with one or more chronic conditions living at home or in residential long-term care settings. This project will include initial feasibility and preparation work for defining the REALISM intervention for use in older adults with chronic conditions using intervention mapping steps. The aim of the REALISM intervention is to provide older adults, their caregivers and healthcare providers with a training program on managing short- and long-term challenges due to chronic conditions (e.g., hypertension, hypercholesterolaemia, arthritis, ischaemic heart disease) using a goal setting and attainment plan based on the adaptive strategies selection, optimisation, and compensation. 

To be eligible for this position, you require a PhD in a relevant health sciences specialty completed in an English-speaking country. You have relevant experience in quantitative and/or qualitative analysis, relevant experience working in either age-related and/or in community and primary healthcare settings, knowledge or a keen interest in psychological health and gerontology, a strong teamwork ethic, and good understanding for overall project intellectual sharing and confidentiality.

Benefits & Remuneration

This part time, fixed term position attracts remuneration of $113,918 to $134,596 pa (20% pro-rata) plus 17% University superannuation contribution.

Overview

Edith Cowan University School of Medical and Health Sciences has recently created a Postdoctoral Fellowship with two part time positions to undertake several projects focusing on identifying novel risk factors associated with unfavourable health outcomes in patients with chronic kidney disease, and to undertake intervention study aim to improve these health outcomes. The Fellowship is directly funded by Edith Cowan University, with additional grant funding from National and Health Medical Research Council to ensure completion of the projects. There will also be opportunity to be involved in broader clinical epidemiological projects to understand the role of nutrition in chronic diseases and novel vascular biomarkers in predicting health outcomes. 

The Role

The School is looking for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to lead several clinical sciences and epidemiological projects focusing on improving health outcomes in patients with chronic kidney disease, including patients maintained on dialysis treatment or have received kidney transplants. The research will involve an exploration of novel risk factors of the three most common complications in patients with chronic kidney disease, including cardiovascular disease, infections, and cancer. Understanding the relationship of these novel risk factors and adverse health outcomes will be critical in the development of innovative prediction modelling and develop innovative strategies to improve these health outcomes in patients with chronic kidney disease. These research findings will have direct clinical relevance and will likely lead to a change in clinical practice and potential policy changes in the field of chronic kidney disease. The successful candidate will be expected to:


	Conduct and co-ordinate research studies, including independence in conducting advanced statistical modelling and ensure adherence to strict ethical research conduct.
	Familiarity in ethics submission, data linkage and setting up of/data entry into RedCAP.
	Assist in grant writing and submission process.
	Publish and promote the results of the research.
	Engage in the supervision and training of research students and other relevant supervision.
	Work collaboratively across health services and research partners, including international collaborators.


Skills and Experience

You must have:


	A PhD in a clinical area of research, particularly in clinical epidemiology (applicants must have a PhD at the commencement of the contract).
	Complex biostatistical skills (or ability to learn new methods independently). 
	Experience in setting up RedCAP and data linkage. 
	Experience in planning and conducting scientific research.
	Excellent scientific writing skills with a demonstrated record of research publications. 
	Interest in and knowledge of implementation methods.
	Excellent interpersonal, communication and organisational skills.
	Demonstrated capacity to work collaboratively with a range of healthcare professionals and services.
	Demonstrated capacity to manage projects and budgets 


Experience and demonstrated interest with complex statistical modelling such as machine learning methods and demonstrated experience in the handling and analysis of big data would be highly desired.
